Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a healing technique developed by Australian healer Tom Bowen in the 1950’s. Since then, this incredibly effective technique has spread across the world and revolutionized many healing practices.

Bowen Therapy is primarily used for relieving musculoskeletal aches and pains, but is also beneficial for improving the health of the whole body.

A Bowen Therapy session consists of a series of gentle manipulations throughout specific points in the body, many of which correspond to acupuncture points. These gentle “moves” release tension and balance energy flow. Between each set of manipulations, the practitioner leaves the room for 2 minutes to allow the client to relax and integrate the corrective moves.

Bowen Therapy Hint!

At the bottom of your sternum (the bone in the middle of your chest) is a small piece of bone about a ½ inch long called the xiphoid process. You might be able to feel it. Immediately below the xiphoid process on the soft tissue of the abdomen lies a Bowen Therapy Point that you can use to help indigestion, nausea or breathing difficulties like asthma. Place your thumb lightly on the skin about a ½ inch below the tip of the xiphoid process (last piece of bone that you can feel with deep pressure). Breathe in deeply, and then out. Holding your breath out, gently move the skin under your thumb upwards as far it will easily go, apply a tiny bit more pressure, and then move the skin down as far as it will go. You only need to do this gentle move once, but it can be repeated if needed. This will often help take the edge off of stomach problems and may even help in an acute asthma attack.

Corrections can be applied to the whole body—the knees, shoulders, jaw, tailbone, spine, feet, elbows and wrists, hips—and used to target specific organs such as the liver, kidneys, gallbladder, lungs and digestive system. Typically only one or two treatments are required for simple problems.

Bowen therapy is gentle and effective. It often helps those who haven’t found relief with other methods.
